Activate America
YMCA Activate America is a long-term public health initiative of the YMCA movement that is focused on making healthy living a reality for millions of Americans. This initiative is the YMCA’s response to this crisis, creating a framework for change and a social movement to address the growing need. Small changes lead to big success.
The YMCA has the knowledge, expertise, network and reach to proactively address our nation’s health crisis as the nation’s oldest and largest community-based organization. With a mission dedicated to building a healthy spirit, mind and body, the YMCA has an opportunity to play an even more critical role in the community.
America is in a health crisis so severe that for the first time in memory, this generation of children could face a lower life expectancy than their parents. Childhood obesity poses immediate and long-term health risks, including increased likelihood of diabetes and obesity. Children who develop healthy exercise and eating habits are more likely to lead healthy lifestyles in adulthood.
Our society has the power to influence the most critical factors in this crisis – physical inactivity and unhealthy eating. Our nation is facing a dramatic lifestyle health crisis. Sixty million adults – about 30% of the U.S. adult population – and nine million children are obese or overweight. Small changes, such as moderate physical activity, can make a major impact.
